What is happening to Aikido???
I have seen quite a few Dan gradings now, but do not understand how Some get through. Big mistakes poor technicals, and yet still pass?? Jo work with little to no understanding of the Jo. Might just as well put pom poms on the ends! Better to do no Jo work than some that I have seen. Knife work with no control! Bring back live blade and true attacks. It would be better to fail a few times than to be graded second Dan grade instead of 2nd kyu!
Alas, that seems to be the way all schools are going.

Was there any particular school or association you had in mind? We might be able to comment further if we knew who you were talking about.
Poor grading results are normally due to the technical committee allowing people to pass. If this does happen, three things come to mind.
1. They are trying to make a fast buck. 2. They are letting the student down, by allowing them to think they are good enough to be that next grade. 3. The association does not have any goals or standards. Basically the grade means absolutely nothing!
Aikido & weapons are a basic fundamental. If a potential Dan grade cannot handle a Jo, Ken & Tanto, their Taijutsu must also be very bad! That also cascades down to that student’s teacher, who must also be bad! If that individual teacher is sending bad students to be graded, the head of the association must also be flawed. If poor students are allowed to pass, the buck stops from the top down.
